The One Hit Wonder Music Release/Feedback/Whatever thread

Postby Shinden » Sat Oct 10, 2009 4:30 pm

So, this is hopefully going to be the dumping ground of sorts for the music that will possibly be used for One Hit Wonder. Unless I get a swift kick in the ass for not hiding this stuff within the confines of our own project board/thread/thing, I'm gonna just do it all here, in the Sound board/thread/thing. Yeah...

So, for those who may not know, my name's Alex [Sperr], and I'm one half of the (as far as I know) established sound-team for the 2D project (Curse my inability to remember names! Oh well, the other guy'll post inevitably!). While I originally planned on being a full-blown coder for the project, my familiarity with LMMS (a nice, free music sequencer program for Windows/Linux computers) seems to have elevated me to the status of "Music man"!

So while I go around posting my music and whatnot, feel free to provide feedback! Just don't expect me to be well versed in technical terms related to software-synthesized music composition (I just play around until I come across an interesting tone!)

you can email me at sperr1@umbc.edu, or awsperr@gmail.com (but please don't invite spambots!)
Or, you can just post on the forum. I'm pretty much guaranteed to be logged in most of the time!

Oh, and brace yourself for long posts and quirky post structure; that's how I roll!

EDIT: you can also brace yourself for inconsistently-scheduled posts, too!

It looks fixed - I set it to 20 MB, but I'd suggest keeping it under 18.

F- Yeah CNLohr!

now, to copypasta what I was gonna originally post...

(Pulls message out of the Wayback archive):
"Posts (from me) will be structured roughly in the format of "Track Number (ordered by date of completion/posting), and devNotes, which give an abbreviated explanation of the song and how I ended up making it, etc..." <- this was a lot more coherent until the post suddenly reset. Weak!

Track 01:

Originally, this was a 20+MB WAV, later converted to a 5MB OGG-vorbis. unfortunately, current settings cap the max upload size to 2MB, so I ran the WAV through Audacity, changed the sampling rate from 44100Hz to 22050 Hz, then fixed the speed (lower rates lead to lower songspeeds, apparently?!). Proud to say it's only 1.62 MB! Except now it won't accept OGGs (GODDAMMIT!)

Track 01, as it's tentatively called, has what is described as a 'medieval-punk' feel to it. I was aiming for a fantasy-esque music style, which meant excessive use of classical music!
The song itself was made using LMMS (a music sequencing program) along with a series of Software-Synth instrument plugins (DSK Strings, Brass, Acoustic Drums, and Electric Guitar round out the current instrument lineup). It's a really catchy, somewhat punkish song that's meant to be looped over and over again...

Due to the lower sampling rate, the drums sound a bit 'blurred', in my opinion. If it weren't for these [as of 10/10/09] attachment restrictions..."

Back to the present time:
ignore the bit about filesize and whatnot... I'm posting the 5Mb ogg vorbis version with 44100 Hz sample rate. ENJOY IT! (God knows how much of a bitch it was trying to upload this song before the upload settings were tweaked...)

Track 02 (Forest stage theme):

there are two versions of this song; the short version, and the longer version...

The setting of the forest stage is, obviously, a forest. Specifically, it's a North American-like forest with plenty of top-cover, resulting in a somewhat dark forest (or so I've interpreted...); as such, Track 02 isn't a cartoony-happy-colorful forest theme... it's a bit "gray", in my opinion...

The longer version of the song... In my opinion, it's one of the better songs I've churned out while coming up with level themes... the guitar portion is slightly altered from the proposal version

Short Version... this is the proposal-stage version of the Forest theme (I know the name says "jungle", but the rainforest description has apparently been dropped...)

J/w how big are the LMMS files? SVN is usually used for the source - if we can also have MUSIC "source code," that would be super rad.

ultra late reply:

the .mmp and .mmpz files used by LMMS are really small. We could essentially put the source files up on subversion, although I'm reluctant to have someone able to modify my stuff...

In other news:

I've got more music than confirmable stages... original content for the win!

for those who are interested, I could post the other tracks I have. IMO they don't sound as cool as the two tracks that have been constantly shown off to everyone (the jungle theme and the title theme), but still, who doesn't like free music?

Currently have tracks for:
a level set in a volcano
an underwater level
a level set high in the clouds (I envision a tower of some sort)
a cave level

Yep, I've definitely overtaken the rest of the project, which means it's time to settle down and implement SDL_mixer.

It'd be awesome to see some other people's work... I believe aring1 (I hope I'm referring to the correct person; I am not that great with remembering names) is doing some music as well.

so, in short:

I guess I could dump LMMS projects into the repository, but I feel that it's kinda pointless to do so, since music isn't necessarily a collaborative venture like that (it is, but it isn't. I feel that some of the stuff is best done individually by the composer, to maintain personal musical style.) It might be a good idea to still archive finalized source files in case we want to redo exporting; the repository would be an easy to access / organized area that would make finding the correct files pretty easy.

oh, and I has musics to share! Hooray for overtaking the rest of the team!

Hey, now you can listen to my music, and not have to stare at a musical note in cover flow!

Hey, so I'm interested in writing music for you as well. I have a bunch of tracks that aren't being used for anything (I basically composed them for practice with tonality cause I've been doing atonal music for awhile now). I've never heard of LMMS, so I'm curious what you're using and if I should use it to streamline the process. Right now I'm using Reason 4 (an absurdly powerful synthesizer program) and Sibelius 3 (which is actually for music notation but I can write midi quickly with it), along with Sony Soundforge 9 for real audio editing.

So I have things for like fire, beach, ice levels etc. As well as some 8-bit or techno sounding things just in case. Like for boss battles. But I wanted to write more, so I was wondering what you guys needed in terms of music.

For instance, here's some evil carnival music.
